Washington voter registration rules

To register in Washington you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States

  • be at least 18 years old by Election Day (A new state law in 2018 made it possible for 16- and 17-year-olds to start the vote registration process)

  • be a legal resident of Washington state, your county, and precinct for 30 days immediately preceding Election Day

  • not be disqualified from voting due to a court order

  • not be under Department of Corrections supervision for a Washington felony conviction

    • In Person: Election Day

    • By Mail: 8 days before Election Day

    • Online: 8 days before Election Day

    Update your registration if ...

    • You are new to Washington State

    • You have recently moved

    • You have a new mailing address

    • You changed your name

    Find a ballot drop box or mail your ballot

    • To return your ballot by mail, simply drop your ballot in a mailbox; no postage necessary. Mail-in ballots must be in the box before the last pick-up time on Election Day to be postmarked on time.
