The Stanwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has announced the school’s 10th annual slate of inductees.
Among them are six individual athletes, a contributor, a coach, and four teams who will be inducted in a ceremony and banquet on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Stanwood High School.
In addition, a local family that has lived in the Stanwood-Camano area for more than 117 years will be recognized for their invaluable contributions to athletics and for their consistent school support.

Among the individual athletes the committee is honoring:

Madison Yerigan, a three-time state champion in track and field

George Ovenell, a 1950 graduate of Twin City High School who lettered 10 times in three different sports

Barb Beals, who earned letters in four sports during the earliest days of girls interscholastic sports competition

Jake Allen, a three-time placer at the state wrestling championships who excelled in football as well

Jade Borseth, who took fifth in the state cross country championships and participated in state golf and basketball from 2008-12 while earning 12 varsity letters

Matt Roe, Stanwood High’s most decorated swimmer who won two state titles and placed in the top four three other times.
John Galbreath is this year’s Contributor Award winner for his sports writing and photography and for his 19 seasons of coaching boys and girls basketball.
Scott Knight will be inducted for his 16 years as head baseball coach for Stanwood High School and for his ambassadorship for the diamond sport at the state, national and international levels.
The 2004-05 boys grappling squad sent eight wrestlers to Mat Classic XVIII and five of them placed in the top eight to finish 10th overall.
Stanwood’s 2011-12 girls wrestling team took second at the state championship after Laura Charboneau (25-0) won her weight class, Casey Mather took third and Savannah Phillips placed fourth.
In the fall of 1949, Twin City High School’s grid squad finished with a 9-0-1 record and an undefeated string of 17 straight wins over two seasons. That record would have likely earned it a No. 1 ranking among all state “B” schools had there been a rating system at the time.
The 1915-16 Stanwood High girls basketball team was the first in local history to play an interscholastic game. Their 20-7 win over neighboring Marysville was lauded by the local fans as “a truly exciting contest.”
The Lervick family, which descends from Ole and Marit Torset Lervick who arrived in Stanwood’s Cedarhome area back in 1907, will be recognized at the fall banquet for their role in preserving the rich athletic history in the Stanwood-Camano community.
