The Stanwood-Camano School District is proud to announce that Dr. Michael Hanna will become the next Principal of Utsalady Elementary School, effective July 1.

Dr. Hanna has worked in education since 1999, including as an adjunct college professor and as a public school director of curriculum. He is currently principal at Stratton Elementary School in Arlington, Massachusetts.

He brings a strong background in academic leadership, program development, and using data to improve performance.

Dr. Hanna prides himself on being highly collaborative, a great communicator, and creating a school culture that promotes success.

“I am excited to help lead the Utsalady Elementary School family to prepare our young people for thriving futures,” he said.

He holds a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Lesley University, a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Endicott College, a Master’s degree in Philosophy from Boston College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and French from Seattle University.

The search began in late March when Dr. Julie Echols announced she will be stepping down in June after four years at Utsalady Elementary School.

During the hiring process, staff and members of the public provided input and feedback via surveys and community meetings that helped guide the search.

A diverse team composed of more than 15 members of the community, staff, and the District Equity Team were involved in candidate interviews. A community candidate forum on April 19 attracted several dozen people online and in-person to meet the finalists.

In the 2023-24 school year, Utsalady Elementary School will be home to more than 315 students and about 65 staff members.

Welcome Michael Hanna
