The Stanwood-Camano School District received a communication on October 22, 2009, from Dr. Gary Goldbaum, MD, MPH, Health Officer & Director at Snohomish County Health Department, strongly urging all schools to consider canceling or postponing extra-curricular events that involve overnight stays in close quarters to prevent the spread of H1N1 in the education community. School District employees, in consultation with the health departments, will determine whether a school event is cancelled or postponed.
Additionally, if a decision is made to hold an event, the following precautions should be followed: if there is evidence that a student appears to have influenza-like symptoms (especially fever and cough/sore throat), staff members should isolate the student and contact the parents/guardians to pick-up the student, promptly. Staff members, volunteers or chaperones, who have flu-like symptoms, should not attend events.
Prepare In Advance:
We want to remind parents and staff of the importance of prevention and how to stay safe. Parents please update your emergency contact information with your child(s) school and have a back-up plan prepared in advance.
What You Can Do To Prevent H1N1 (Swine) Flu:
• If you are sick, stay home.
• Sneeze or cough into a tissue, elbow or sleeve. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can be spread that way.
Symptoms of H1N1 (Swine) Flu:
• Fever 100 degrees or more, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue.
• Please remember that students should stay home when they have any of the above symptoms.
