This fall, Stanwood High School (SHS) students will witness solar power in action thanks to a grant from Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD) in partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF).
A portion of the $14,500 grant paid to install the 1,360 watt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, or solar panel, in late July on the east side of the SHS campus, near the agriculture department. This allows for unobstructed southern, eastern and western exposure to the sun to maximize electrical power output.
This project, named the “Stanwood High School Sustainable Power Project” by students, uses the solar panel to supply power to the agriculture department’s greenhouses and aquaculture laboratory. In the description of the project, Snohomish PUD describes that the agriculture program at SHS “is closely aligned with BEF’s desire to support renewable energy education along with watershed/fisheries restoration.”
Students from SHS teacher Ryan Ovenell’s Natural Resources class researched and applied for the grant in November 2007. In their application, the students described their main goal of the project is not only to supply power to the school, but to “use the solar panel as a platform for educating elementary, middle, and high school students and community members about the advantages of renewable energy, specifically solar energy.” Students plan to create a mobile solar panel demonstration trailer to aid in their education efforts and welcome the community to tour the solar panels and learn about the PV system. The grant also provided funding for a data logging system that will record the solar energy produced by the PV system and display a digital energy monitor in the commons at SHS and also displaying the data on the school’s website. More information about the project and community tour dates will be available this fall.
