For six years, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Jensen has been bringing the community, schools, and law enforcement together. As the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Stanwood High School (SHS) Deputy Jensen’s work is focused on law enforcement, preventing criminal activity through education, and providing counseling services within the school. His hard work and dedication recently earned him then SRO of the Year award from the Washington School Safety Organization.
Each day Deputy Jensen works on building “positive relationships” with
students and staff. He works closely with classroom teachers and
administrators to present information and answer questions on a variety
of topics including the law, drugs, safety, crime prevention, violence
prevention and community awareness of these issues. In addition, Jensen
presents to classrooms of students, assists in investigating student
discipline incidents, and talks to students about harassment, drugs,
alcohol and cyber bullying to name a few. Students are encouraged to
speak with Deputy Jensen about any conflicts, questions or concerns
they may have. Deputy Jensen is there to help.
When asked what he finds most rewarding about being a SRO, Deputy
Jensen responded, “The best part is when I see those kids that I’ve
interacted with and to hear them say, “I’ve changed” and then hear what
they are doing with their life.”
Jensen, a 20-year deputy with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office,
also focuses on emergency prevention for the school. Since his arrival
at SHS, the school’s crisis team has introduced numerous safety and
response drills, increased the number of cameras and features on their
security system, and focused on prevention through education and
awareness. When crises unfortunately occur, SHS Principal Christine
Gruver said Deputy Jensen is a critical part of the response no matter
the type of emergency or time of day, “He is always willing to lend a
hand.”
Principal Gruver considers the SRO program to be an important step in
providing a safe learning environment for students and staff. “I can’t
say enough about how Officer Jensen has helped move our school forward
with safety planning and preparedness. The campus at SHS is much safer
because of Officer Jensen.”
