Stanwood-Camano School District Information about Kindergarten Programs
Recently, the Washington State Legislature provided additional funding for full-time, everyday kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year, and will fund full-time kindergarten for all schools in the State starting in 2016-17. Three schools in the Stanwood-Camano School District were funded by the State this year. The schools are Twin City Elementary, Elger Bay Elementary, and Stanwood Elementary. On Wednesday, July 22nd, the School Board of Directors approved additional district funding to include full-time, everyday kindergarten at Utsalady and Cedarhome Elementary Schools. This decision was based on research, which supports the benefits of full-time kindergarten for all children. Providing full-time kindergarten has been a long time goal for the School Board of Directors because it gives all students a great start to their school career.
The Stanwood-Camano School District is looking forward to expanding the half-time kindergarten program to full-time in the 2015-16 school year. This increase in time will bring some fundamental changes to our kindergarten classrooms. The district is busy preparing for these changes and is excited about the opportunities for our students. The most obvious change will be the amount of time students are in school. Next year students in kindergarten will attend school the same amount of time as all other elementary grades do as opposed to the current model in which students attend full days two or three days per week. As before, we will still have late start Wednesdays, which allow for necessary professional development for district staff.
Students attending full-time kindergarten will eat lunch at school, have recess and focus on state kindergarten standards and specific learning targets set by the teacher. Physical, social, linguistic and academic needs will be the focus of individual, small and whole group learning in the core subjects of reading/language arts, math, social studies and science.
In preparation for this change, materials and approaches are being adjusted. Half of the day will focus primarily on reading/language arts, math, science and social studies while the other half, students will participate in learning centers related to academics. The learning centers will focus on letters, words, numbers and science to make learning meaningful and academic while rich in community and real-world experiences. This extra time will also give teachers the opportunity to work individually and in small groups, which will allow them the time to differentiate for the needs of each student.
Parents have the option to enroll their children in a half-day or full-day program. For more information about opting your child out of the full-time program, please contact the Stanwood-Camano School District office (360) 629-1237.
The Stanwood-Camano School District is excited about partnering with you to begin your child’s formal public education and the ability to support a full-day, everyday kindergarten program.
